Learning a language as complex as the English can be easy to understand for some. However, for others, learning Basic English can be an intimidating and an arduous task, especially if it is like a second language which means, in effect having to learn an entirely foreign language. Whatever one’s need to learn English is, be it for travel, business, employment or purely personal reasons, learning English requires dedication, willingness, and commitment. Commitment is necessary if one is to apply oneself to learning a language as intricate as English, along with a desire to make mistakes and learn from them. Another equally vital requirement is a commitment. The student must be willing to commit him or herself to learning the language.
Students determined to learn Basic English must endeavour to speak at least some English on a daily basis. Undoubtedly, the best way to learn any language after all is practice. It should be irrespective of one’s current knowledge level, i.e. one should try to speak English daily regardless of whether one is almost fluent in the language or knows only a few words of English. These students should first of all focus on their pronunciation. It is because even if one has a fluent knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, native speakers or for that matter anyone else, will have a hard time to understand your words if not correctly pronounced.
Close attention should be paid to those sounds that are not available in one’s native tongue as one may not be familiar with these sounds at all. For example, an Arabic student might find it hard to pronounce words such as “Party” or “Present” as there is no “P” sound in the Arabic alphabet. Such students should make an extra effort to pronounce these words carefully to ensure these sounds get incorporated into their speech patterns. Students should also endeavour to expand their vocabulary in both words and phrases and familiarise themselves with English speech patterns and idioms. Once familiar students should focus on incorporating these new words and phrases into their daily speaking routine to ensure they use these words and phrases in appropriate situations.
One of the best ways to do this is via the internet, which provides a vast amount of resources for students to learn Basic English pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. An outstanding example of such a resource is English Club TV or ECTV, a site that offers students many programmes designed and dedicated to teaching students of all knowledge levels, the various aspects of the English language.
